Forget Me Not is still one of my favorite coop indiegames. Getting friends and acquaintances without any context on the game to play it is a hilarious experience.

SA GameDev VI Death & Taxes Reviews

The following is a post I did for SA’s GameDev competition back in 2011. The theme was Death & Taxes. Link to all games.

Since all the teams put effort into making these games, I put effort into at least trying every game. So here are my first impressions/criticisms of every game. Now I just got to decide which one to vote for… (Note: I didn’t read this thread before hand, but I notice that some of the problems I faced other people here had them too. Take that as a hint devs!)

A Date With Death: Good art style and good music too. The gameplay is like a warioware game, which I had fun with. Dialogue was humorous as well. The only problem I had with the game was that sometimes the clicking was wonky like during the unarming of the nuke at the part after putting in the key the spot to click was very small and random.

Bicker Town: The game doesn’t really look that appealing and the gameplay isn’t fun.

Blood Tax: AAAAAAaaaah. The art and music is decent enough, but there are two big issues here. One, when you move the background moves way to fast causing a disorienting effect. Two, I don’t have a joypad so jumping controls are really annoying. Add that with those flies or bees or whatever, spikes and platforming just made me not be able to finish this.

Cavaran: The artwork is fantastic. Although, the exclusion of the hunting minigame, shopping and inventory (and I don’t think the random events like people going missing or items getting stolen are there too) really bump down the gameplay of it. I would love to see those features in later versions and maybe even expanding with new features. Also where’s the midi music?

Citizens Inc.: Interesting concept, although the controls are a bit annoying. It feels like I’m never going forward, making it hard to collect the cores.

Contingency 88: It’s an interesting type of puzzle game, but from the manual I thought it was going to be a city builder sim.

Datd: I… don’t think this game is finished.

Day Off: Solid concept (action-liteRPG), solid game. The descriptions for the items and art style are very funny. The variety of items really adds to making the game fun (The anime mag was really helpful during bosses). The game just feels… Complete! My only complaint is that the common enemies kind of got boring to fight near the end of it, and I would have liked level specific enemies.

Dead vs The IRS: Presentation is not that good. I guess the platforming was fun for a bit, but got old fast. The enemies became easy to kill when I learned that I could shoot.

Deadweed: Well it is very similar to Harvest Moon! I would say the gameplay maybe a little slow, but that’s just kind of how those games are. It’s still a solid game though.

Dtc: The game doesn’t seem to work, and they scrapped their other game 5 hours before the due date? Bad idea!

Got Balls: Too hectic and not a whole lot fun. And besides isn’t this just the gamemaker tutorial game?

Kingdom of Fish: I don’t really get this game. I think the problem is that your character goes too slow, you can’t kill anyone besides the blue guys, and each level is the same level just you collect more souls.

Mastema: Norton said it was a virus, god damn it norton.

Project Cloak: Game isn’t starting for some reason. I’ve using Windows 7 if that helps.

Punch Fight: The controls are really wonky. You can’t really go up sloped surfaces, or you can it just takes a while (unless you jump). You can’t attack while in the air, making those bats somewhat impossible to kill. Jumping is a bit weird too. The game also loaded kind of slow, I almost seemed to crash.

Death and Taxis: Well it’s a simple game, but I still had fun. Death just wrecking stuff up (or should I say taxis) is fun, and something missing from the other games starring death in this contest. Though the art isn’t that good, and it crashed when it was at the submitting score part.

Silver Ruin: What the hell is going on here aaaaaaah. Controls are weird and the game doesn’t look that good. I also can’t get past that first spike pit jump… it just doesn’t let me.

Karmarun: It’s frustrating. The spacey jumping and spikes just aren’t fun for me.

Taxman: It’s glitched! When the game starts all I see is a screen with clouds and mountains and I have max money.

Taxtris: A fun little game I guess. I’m going to assume that not being able to buy stuff that the family needs because it hasn’t spawned yet is part of the life simulator.

The Auditors: This game um… yeah this. This game is incredibly easy, other than the fact that if you try to rotate the camera it just tries to rotate back to the original view causing it to be constantly moving. And that coffee attack on the final stage… this game would have won if the theme was Deadly Premonition (it’s even got the glowies!).

The Last Sage: I think the coolest mechanic in this game is the “hitting arrows make them go flying back at enemy”. Though I don’t really know what the items do.

The Pact: Art and music are amazing here. The problem in all point and click games comes the somewhat random guessing on what you’re supposed to do. Also it’s more “flinging” than it is “dragging and dropping”. But I still beat it and I liked the twist at the end.

USofZ: Good presentation! The art style reminds me very closely of Atom Zombie Smasher. Though I’m confused on what the objective is. Other than when the cure pops up it doesn’t seem manageable to have multiple territories. Some tips on the help screen would be helpful.

YML: I killed everyone I could, I got all the money I could get, and got glitched on top of a house. Luckily I got off of it.

CharonFishing: I’m not entirely sure what I’m doing wrong. I catch the girls and reel them in I don’t seem to get any points or anything. What I do know is when I catch a blonde girl she gets stuck in the ground and if I don’t spam the arrow keys she glides to the left, hits the side of the map, and turns into the blue girl.

Death’s Toll: Ehhhh not fun.

Life, Taxes And Death: So it’s some type of match em up game? All the text in the game are messed up, as in they are overlapping with other menus or just not visible.

LoSM: I like the “every move uses money” gimmick, but I think the character should die if the money reaches zero. But I liked the game even excluding the gimmick, since the controls weren’t frustrating.

Soul Jelly: Damn is this reminds me of a Cactusquid game, which is a good thing. This has so much charm, and it’s also ridiculous, though I do have some complaints. I think at times the game just becomes pure luck (like when you need a specific amount of kills, or when everyone is going faster than usual and you have to dodge them) and that isn’t that much fun.

Payment Day: Metriodvania eh? Don’t really like them that much as like this game I don’t really know where to go. I loved the music though!

Dig Dig Bit Fury: A type of dig dug game. Very arcadey, very fun.

Taxography: I messed around on hotseat to get a feel of the game and it looks fun. But after I put up a few buildings I don’t know how I’m supposed to do worse. I’m interested in where this game goes.

Psychopomps: Another type of Metriod, but with more direction, which I like. Although I think the health and coins should give more than they do, and maybe the weapon should do more damage. I gave up at the first boss though.

Kablammo: Wa wa wa wa KABOOM. I got a good laugh out of this game. Those doctors are annoying though, and when there are multiple explosions there’s an fps drop. Also, they don’t have any animations, so it’s scary to see an inanimate policeman moving towards me.

Team Z VS Proposition 58: I don’t think this game is finished. When I click a store I can start raiding it, but when the anime sprite caught me I couldn’t raid anymore of the stores, even after I killed her!

Soul Tax: A very fun ghost possessing game. My complaint would be that I think the people would react to getting killed, but I guess that would put up the difficulty.

Morton’s Mortality: A fetch quest game. The problem I had with this game is that I don’t think everything is used (?) There are a few rooms that don’t seem to have any purpose, and when I did everything I could I still had a bunch of items on me.

KillingDinosForAmericaToSaveAfricaAndTakeTheirTaxMoney: I need MORE DINOS to kill. MORE.

Money Garden: I don’t really get what the deaths and taxes are for, like the scoring of it. Am I suppose to collect them or not?

Mountain of Debt: BATTTSSSSS. So many batsss, and those small ones… But you know what, the way the game presents its self and just that type of adventure atmosphere of it makes me want to play more of it. I think I’ll try to finish this later, but I just wish that there wasn’t that many bats.

Katawa Shoujo Review (no spoilerz)

It’s appropriate for me to review this since originally when the hype surrounding this exploded back at release I gained an interest in attempting to make a CYOA myself. Now that the hype and hysteria around the game has died down I decided to play it to get my own verdict on the game.

What I knew before going in:

It’s the cripple dating simulator, that’s all I knew really. I think I remember seeing forum avatars of Hanako and Rin back when the demo came out, but at the time I had no idea that they were from a demo of a game of all places. If anything I had somewhat of a negative attitude towards the game because of the controversy over it

After playing it (going to split this up into general and routes):

As an overall experience I enjoyed it. The soundtrack is relaxing and really well made. The artwork can vary between good to ok, and while the photograph backgrounds may contrast the anime looking characters a little too much you can eventually get use to it. The setting, that is of a high school for people of disabilities, isn’t entirely utilized and feels more like an ordinary high school setting. Though, that is probably due to a thematic choice I’ll explain later on.

The choices given throughout the game are probably the weakest point. At best they are a context reading test to see if the player is paying attention, or at worst is that they are badly worded and somewhat confusing on what the choice means. And since you can save at any screen, it’s easy to roll back decisions.

The themes of the game are strong. The main one is basically spelled out for you, that disabilities don’t define someone. Though a recurring theme throughout the game is that whiteknighting is bad. This was surprising to see in a game with such an anime presentation, but also very welcoming.

Now for each route; I talk about the sex scenes in each route since they are definitely a different beast. It’s also worth mentioning that throughout all the routes there is occasional awkward writing. And another thing to note is that the heart condition the main character has isn’t important in all the routes of the game. It’s only relevant in Emi’s and Lilly’s routes.

Emi: The narrative for this one is solid. Almost everything that happens revolves around the story, meaning there isn’t much fluff. Though the drawback is that the story and struggle the character has is cliche.

The sex scenes make sense in the context of Emi’s character, though they don’t really add anything to the story.

Lilly: This route is very much your ordinary Hollywood romance story. The end sequence especially almost seemed out of a movie. The issues I had with the route was that before the reveal near the end there isn’t anything driving the story.

The sex scenes make sense in the context of the story, though they get ridiculous.

Shizune: The worst route in the game. It is disappointing since the dynamic between Misha and Shizune is interesting, but after Act 1 that dynamic goes away. Every conflict that arises in this route goes nowhere. Well, besides Misha. Misha is the only one with an actual arc in this route so it’s basically her route.

The sex scenes just seem out of place and unnecessary.

Hanako: This route felt somewhat janky. The biggest issue is that Hanako’s character arc is really short. The relationship between her and the main character barely gets off it’s legs when it abruptly ends.

This route has the only sex scene that actually is relevant to the story though.

Rin: This route is basically a character study. It’s a look at a character who is having a bit of an identity crisis. Also having taken a lot of art classes in HS, how the character acts is believable in many ways. The route is in constant struggle, and some have rightly called it an emotional roller coaster ride. The flaw of this path to me is that there isn’t much resolution in the end.

The sex scenes seem out of place, because it doesn’t feel like there is a loving relationship between the main character and Rin.

In conclusion, for an amateur effort I think this project was successful. I don’t think it has the best writing in a videogame ever, but saying it was the worst writing ever would definitely be hyperbole. I would recommend this to fans of high school fiction who might prefer it without some type of supernatural twist.

I wanted it pixelly so I did it at 64x64

I then resized it to 320x320

Most of the adjustments were made so the top and bottom flow better when tiled.

Now for my header I wanted to write “Empire of the Fourteenth” in my bad handwriting. First I did a test, then I went into inkscape and did it a couple times in my bad curve. Originally that was going to be it, but I don’t know how to make the background translucent. So I tried removing the white background in paint.net but it looked pretty bad (with the AA and stuff). So I pixelated it a bit, then filled it in with orange and bam the final product.

Little did I know I was skipping out on an unique RPG game. Now the game is really rough around the edges and overall isn’t the most polished game around, but I felt the atmosphere (which I think has largely had to do with the massive lore from VTM) was great. I don’t even like vampire related stuff that much, but got totally enthralled with the game so I have to give it some props.

But it made me think, what the hell does the cover art have to do with the game? It shows a character that’s only in first hub of the game, one character that maybe one of the important characters of the game, and then a symbol all in a city street. The city street and symbol make somewhat sense, but the whole thing together seems a bit random. So instead I made my own cover art for the game:

I was trying to convey several ideas applicable to VTMB. First, the bloodline. In the game/VTM, the bloodlines are the different races of the vampires. In my picture the bloodlines extend into the blood and also onto the sarcophagus. The implications of extending into the blood can be the clan warfare between the bloodlines, or maybe even something worse… As the sarcophagus is an important part of the games story. The bloodlines attach onto the sarcophagus, implying that they all want it.

Now I didn’t plan on doing anything after this stage, but I was given a final art project in school to make something on a canvas. Since I already had an idea laying around, I decided to improve it more and then put it on a canvas.

This was my hastily done edit of my original picture. The change was instead of the bloodlines being a web, it was changed to be more like a vine. The vine is growing out from one point, which in VTM lore vampires (and in turn the bloodlines) all originated from one source. It was now canvas time.

This was my first time working on a canvas, and I only worked on it for a couple of days because of putting it off (procrastination yay). On this stage as well a friend of mine pointed out they are blood veins (not vines), which I didn’t realize before. I didn’t finish in time, so I turned it in as you see here. In the end, my painting was hastily made and incomplete. But in a way, that describes VTMB perfectly. So I believe in the end my painting is an interesting take on a cover art for VTMB, and also matches the quality of the game too.

Be sure to check out VTMB sometime if you haven’t played it yourself too!

This was so all the devs could get more feedback. The contests theme was Balls. Link to all games.

Ballmageddon
Visuals: They were ok. It wasn’t an eyesore, but it wasn’t anything special either.
Audio: Same with the visuals, where it gets the job done.
Fun: It feels like it’s missing something. Only smashing the buildings gets boring after a few seconds. I assumed the havoc levels meant some enemies would arrive, but I never saw any.
Adherence to Theme: You’re a giant boulder so it works here.
Story: There’s no story.
Blazin’ Baize
Visuals: They were fine. It’s nothing ground breaking, but I liked the consistency meaning the dragons didn’t look out of place.
Audio: Get’s the job done.
Fun: It feels like a minigame. As in it was fun for the 40 to 50 seconds I played it for, but I don’t think I would want to play it again.
Adherence to Theme: You’re hitting balls to dragons, so this checks out.
Story: There’s the exposition at the start, but the mother dragon is just the meter and never shows up. It would have been cool if the mother dragon showed up as a final boss to conclude the game.
BMV
Visuals: The inconsistency is a bit weird. Like I assumed from the opening cutscene it was all going to be mspaint style, which I would have been fine with, but then it’s like a mix of Terraria and mspaint? Like the enemies appear to be mspaint, but everything else is Terraria style.
Audio: Ordinary 8bit tunes, they work.
Fun: I’m going to be honest I didn’t finish the game. I beat the first boss and then looked around some, but the controls are horrible. There’s like some momentum thing going on, all I know is that platforming is aggravating with these controls. I had to stop because I saw there was more platforming and realized I wasn’t going to have any fun with this game.
Adherence to Theme: You are a ball.
Story: The opening cutscene explains it, and I assume you’re trying to get back to the kids.
Hexatron
Visuals: The different color glowing effect the player and enemies have is distracting and makes it hard to distinguish the lasers and stuff. I had a hard time dodging stuff in a room full of enemies because I couldn’t see the lasers.
Audio: Goes with the whole electronic theme, so it works.
Fun: I mentioned the glowing effects, but I also felt like the enemies were all too small. The way you fire with the ship seems like all the weapons aren’t entirely accurate. This would be fine if all the enemies weren’t small meaning you need to be accurate. The RPG aspect and random generated items (and I think rooms as well?) I liked, but all the stats and percentages seemed like unnecessary complexity.
Adherence to Theme: I think the place you’er fighting on is a ball, and there’s some enemies that are balls I think. But that doesn’t seem very concrete to me though.
Story: No story.
Snowballs Chance
Visuals: They are ok.
Audio: Music matches the snow theme.
Fun: I really don’t like the momentum gimmick. This isn’t the first time I’ve seen this in the contest and I don’t think this gimmick is fun for platforming. Like the momentum has no visual cue so it’s hard to tell how far you are going when nothing appears to be changing. Maybe it would work better if it was used on some type of sonic gotta go fast level design, but not on regular platforming. Also the stats just seem unnecessary here. The enemies also have too much HP, especially considering the reload time with the snowballs. I did get to the 2nd level but the game wasn’t improving for me.
Adherence to Theme: You’re a snowball.
Story: No story.
Planet Floop
Visuals: Nothing special about them.
Audio: The music is quite strange. The intro song and then the song played through the game seemed, I don’t know, out of place? I would assume the music would be more intense since your escaping a prison!
Fun: It’s a physics puzzle game, and in my opinion it’s a successful one. I genuinely had fun flinging around the planet. While I think the thrusting power may have been a little too much, the physics weren’t annoying. That allowed me to play through the whole game (my final score was 7465) without getting frustrated. My only big complaint with the game is that clicking the button for the repulsors was a bit glitchy. I had to click it two times every time to have it appear on screen.
Adherence to Theme: You’re flinging around a planet, and there are enemy planets. This checks out.
Story: An interesting premise for a game. I was disappointed there wasn’t an ending cutscene or something to wrap up the story.
Ballpuppy’s Big Adventure
Visuals: The graphics are definitely cute.
Audio: The tropical song goes well with it.
Fun: I’m abit confused on what the sliders on the bottom left of the screen are suppose to do, but I eventually figured out how to control most of it. It was a nice little monkey ball kinda game until I completed a level but I didn’t (??) and my character disappeared and when I tried going back to the end again the game freezed.
Adherence to Theme: The various animals are all ball shaped.
Story: No story.
Pachinkoman
Visuals: I really liked the style here, especially how the characters and areas all looked in its own way unique.
Audio: I liked the song loop as well, because it definitely fit in with the game.
Fun: It’s a point and click adventure game with funny text. I actually enjoyed the writing of the game, and laughed a few times while playing it. The puzzles were perfect, the solutions are all mentioned in the dialogue and descriptions meaning you figure out the puzzles without brute forcing it. Every time I got killed by the puppy I realized another piece to the puzzle. And thankfully there’s no pixel hunting.
Adherence to Theme: You are a pachinko ball man.
Story: You gambled your life away and now you’re in hell. Also a lot of the characters you meet have stories, which did flesh out the setting. Sadly the story isn’t completed, but the kickstarter jab at the end was funny.
Mad Ball
Visuals: It has a unique look to it, everything looks all so nice.
Audio: The music definitely fits with the ballroom deal. The voice acting at the start and end were good, as in they didn’t sound awkward, as well. The fire, screams, and “hmm, yes” also added a great deal to the game.
Fun: Even when the first time I started up the game I had no idea how to play and didn’t notice the I button, it was pretty hilarious watching the party go into chaos. The AI adds a whole other dynamic to what could have been a simple dinner dash type of game to attempting to not make everyone kill each other. My only complaint would be is that you can’t use items right off the conveyer, you need to click them to the table first, although I don’t know if that makes the game too easy or not.
Adherence to Theme: The game takes place in a ballroom.
Story: You are given the task of hosting a ballroom party, making people happy enough to go into the dance floor. A simple premise, but it works for the game.
Spellbounced
Visuals: Simple pixel art, which I’m fine with. Though the regular ball looks like some type of boob with a red tit.
Audio: For some reason I enjoyed the castle track a lot. But over all I was hearing frequent audio cracks, I don’t know why though.
Fun: This was definitely fun for the most part. The various types of enemies, puzzles, and types of balls helped the pace of the game very well. But the controls felt very stiff. Take for example the goo, which is pretty much meatboy. The jumping and momentum was just not at the sweet spot with the goo and other ball types (excluding wrecking ball). Also, I would I could have said I beat the game, but I ran into a glitch (??) I was having some issues with the level I was on, mainly due to the controls, but the icing on the cake was that <here I can’t change into the bubble meaning I can’t continue. I don’t know if it’s a glitch, or intended for some reason.
Adherence to Theme: You’re a ball, and then you can change into other various balls.
Story: You’re a wizard who was shot with a spell of eternal sleep, but your cat is helping you wake up. This is another interesting set up for a story, sadly I couldn’t get to the end to see if it actually concludes.
Relic Hunter
Visuals: It definitely has the NES feel to it, with minimal colors and simple designs, but I liked it.
Audio: Same as visuals, where it’s emulating NES music. Also, the songs do go with each level’s theme from what I’ve seen.
Fun: Now the problem is that I’ve never been that good at these types of arcadey games, which this is obviously trying to be. I did get to the third stage though, so I did enjoy the game. But I think the major trouble I had was with the awkward default control scheme.
Adherence to Theme: You carry around a ball.
Story: The story is in the readme.txt, but in game the story appears to be you stole a golems head which is used as a key for the temple your exploring, so he is chasing you back for it.
Orbs
Visuals: The graphics and such were fine, but I was getting low fps. I changed the resolution around but that didn’t change the bad fps at all. Also there was way too much motion blur as well. The low fps and large motion blur made me really dizzy.
Audio: The audio levels seemed really quiet for some reason. I could barely hear what your character was saying, and it just seemed everything was on low volume. But from what I could make out the voice acting didn’t really seem appropriate. Like I would assume the voice would be scared or uneasy, but instead he sounded pretty casual about the whole “walking around dark house with ghost orbs” thing.
Fun: The low fps and low volume (meaning I couldn’t really hear how many orbs I had left to take pictures of) kinda killed the fun for me, but I liked the idea of exploring the house and capturing the ghosts.
Adherence to Theme: The ghosts you’re taking pictures of are orbs.
Story: Your character is taking 10 pictures of orbs for some reason. The ending is a bit strange, that he collapses and then reawakes in front of house again. Unless I didn’t collect enough orbs or something and that was just a bad ending.
Punch Fight II
Visuals: The graphics are ok.
Audio: Ok voice acting, though I guess the enthusiasm when you do the fully charged kick is pretty good.
Fun: The movement seemed a bit awkward. I don’t know if it was because of the terrain (which I got stuck a lot) or whatever but it just felt clunky when I moved around. Also is there only one level? Seems like only the tutorial level made it in.
Adherence to Theme: You kick a puppy ball thing.
Story: I think the story is you’re a participant in this puppy kicking contest or something?
Something Ball
Visuals: Minimal visuals, which works well for the game
Audio: Minimal music as well, which I don’t know if it got muted for me while I played but didn’t really notice it.
Fun: It’s a physics puzzler, and it’s fun. The only level I got annoyed with was 11, but it was fun throughout. How the game works seems slightly unique as well, with your mouse manipulating the ball via a third party source.
Adherence to Theme: You are moving around a ball, and also shaping or scrolling over other balls as well.
Story: No story really.

test chamber 004998

Here is my first Portal 2 test chamber. For fun I decided to make it multipath. Essentially it’s two puzzle rooms put together, but that’s what multipath is anyway.

I always find it funny, but billy morshu has given up vid making, so I guess this is is pretty much my dumb attempt at a tribute.

I found this new never before seen teaser for Evangelion 3.0 You...

I found this new never before seen teaser for Evangelion 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo.
